Typically when someone answers the question "How are you" in Russian there are three possible types of answers: positive, negative, and neutral. In English you are almost expected to give a positive answer because it facilitates the movement of the conversation from greetings and introductions to the real topics of discussion. But in Russian you are more likely to hear a range of positive, nega...
How Are You in Russian | How to say What's Up in Russian
Переглядів 5 тис.2 роки тому
Asking "How are you?" in Russian is different than asking it in English. First of all, Russian speakers ask these kinds of questions less often than English speakers because English uses them as greetings. Sometimes English speakers see each other and one says "What's up?", then the other says "How's it going?", and then they part ways. Neither answered the other's question. In Russian these qu...

As an Indian, visiting Russia in 2014-2016 was amazing. Most people were super friendly, curious and generally positive. Fast forward 10 years, and pretty much most of them I have met them in Europe and the US are rude, closed off, and some openly racist. The regime has managed to channel all the anger and bitterness away towards other cultures and nations. They don't even like the other ethnicities from their own country like Tatars, Chechens, Bashkir etc. In LA and Miami, they have taken over a large swathe of houses by putting 20-30 bunk beds in each, refuse to integrate and only allow their own kind to rent the space. Absolutely a tragedy what has been done to them by brainwashing and propaganda, similar to the CCP by the Chinese and Turks by Erdogan.

I’m bilingual in Spanish and English and I find easier to learn Russian when I’m thinking in Spanish. Time ago, I asked if it was easier to learn it from Spanish or from English. I was told it didn’t make difference but it definitely does. When I try with an English speaker teacher, it’s harder for me to understand the sounds. But, when I learn it with a Spanish speaker teacher or books, etc, it’s easier. Now, after learning the Russian alphabet, I’m able to write simple words but I can read more complex ones. At first, was difficult to “separate” the words when listening to Russian music or a Russian speaker such as President Putin. In every language, the words seem to be spoke all together and it makes it more difficult to understand it. So, I decided to listen to Russian music for long periods of time and trying to sing them as I did before with the English language. Now, I’m able to recognise separated words and even sing along. It made me so happy to realise I was able now to recognise words like “how”, “hello”, “thank you”, “tomorrow”, “never”, “always”, “love”, etc. All of it without studying at all. Only listening to music. I jump of happiness when President Putin speaks and I get some of the words and I understand them. I recognise those words and I’m over the moon. Anyway. I’m 62 years old and I’m learning Russian, therefore, everyone else can do it. Do not stop trying. Thank you, teacher, because this class, did help me to get a, yet better understanding of some of the “strange” signs that were resisting. 🌹

Very informative and entertaining, thank you. These cultural/lexical differences in languages are amusing. Hello is an interesting one. In English it is used for a greeting, but in most European languages it is also used to attract attention (but not in English) and in French the word allo is not used as a greeting at all except when you are on the telephone when it is the standard greeting word. I think Привет works like hello in English and notlike hello in many European languages German for example, that is to say Привет is only used as a greeting. It is never used to attract attention, am I right?
